Wood Shavings The Journal of Crown Point and our Neighborhood
<< Back
Based out of New York City, the homeowner worked directly with Crown Point kitchen designer, Karen Laskoske, to create a sophisticated kitchen for her mountainside retreat.

With a blue backsplash tile for inspiration, the Crown Point finishing team created a custom shade of soft blue for perimeter cabinetry.

The island, in contrasting Cherry with a Chestnut stain, features turned legs inset into the corners. This formal design detail anchors finished end panels and gives the island a traditional feel.

A small hutch on the end serves as an espresso center, complete with a beadboard back and tru lite muntin doors. Set off from the rest of the cabinetry with an extended base, this cabinet appears to be a stand alone piece of furniture.

The homeowner loves to entertain-sometimes for groups of up to 100 people! To make clean up a little easier, she chose a one-piece custom stainless steel sink with a top that stretches more than 11 feet!

A sliding cutting board is conveniently placed above the disposal for speedy food prep, and the double basin is deep enough to soak large pots and pans.

The best part about this space, according to the homeowner, is the beautiful view!

The range wall features custom Trikeenan artisan tile from Keene, New Hampshire. Each tile, in varying shades of blue and brown, was applied by hand in a brickbond pattern. The bold backsplash unifies the contrasting cabinetry finishes.

On either side of the range hood, cabinet doors open to reveal space saving spice racks.

A large island with an Imperial Marble top from nearby Danby, Vermont offers a central work surface.

Four drawers and two doors in the island offer extensive storage space, and a second dishwasher comes in handy when entertaining.

Behind six doors on the opposite side of the island the homeowner has organized food by ethnic region to save time.

A Victorian toekick helps to create the furniture style look.

This corner offers a nice stretch of open counter space and plenty of storage above and below the counter. A lazy susan makes the most of the lower corner, and a bank of drawers is conveniently placed to the right of the range.

Next to the fridge, two wide drawers are ideal for silverware and other cooking utensils, while pots and pans store nicely in the cabinet below.

A multipurpose area with tru lite muntin doors make the transition from kitchen to desk area in the far corner.

The desk is close enough to the kitchen to write lists as the pasta boils, and also provides an out-of-the-way place for paying bills or finishing a book report.

Open shelves are adjustable, and a beadboard back offers a period style backdrop for displaying family heirlooms and treasured cookbooks.

Two file drawers keep bills and bank statements in order, and a keyboard drawer slides out when needed.

Just around the corner from the kitchen is a built-in pantry extending from floor to ceiling for maximum storage space.

Several rollout drawers keep dry goods, paper products and other kitchen necessities in order and within easy reach of the kitchen.
